A sewage treatment plant (also known as a wastewater treatment plant) is a facility designed to treat and process sewage or wastewater generated from residential, commercial, and industrial sources. • Preliminary Treatment: In this stage, large objects such as sticks, rags, and debris are removed from the wastewater using screens or grates. Grit chambers may also be used to remove heavier particles like sand and gravel.

This is achieved by allowing the wastewater to flow slowly through large tanks, where gravity causes suspended solids to settle to the bottom as sludge. The sludge is then removed and further processed.
• Secondary Treatment: After primary treatment, the wastewater undergoes biological treatment in secondary treatment processes. This typically involves the use of biological organisms (such as bacteria and other microorganisms) to break down organic matter and remove nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. Common secondary treatment methods include activated sludge processes, trickling filters, and sequencing batch reactors.
